Electric Boat is a leader in the design, construction, and modernization of nuclear powered submarines
Established in 1899, Electric Boat delivered the first submarine to the US Navy in 1900. In 1954 EB delivered the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, which revolutionized undersea warfighting capabilities.
Since Nautilus, Electric Boat has designed 15 of 19 classes of nuclear submarines and delivered more than 100 nuclear submarines to the US Navy. EB is the design yard and prime contractor for the Virginia-class attack submarine and the Columbia-class ballistic missile submarine.
Virginia Class Attack Submarines
Virginia-class attack submarines (SSN) are designed for the full range of 21st century missions. These submarines excel in littoral and open-ocean environments and collect intelligence critical to the full spectrum of warfare. They are capable of extended submerged operations with superior stealth, endurance, mobility and firepower. The next generation of Virginia-class submarine includes the Virginia Payload Module with increased strike capacity and other undersea warfare capabilities.
Columbia-class Ballistic Missile Submarines
Electric Boat designed and built all the currently serving Ohio-class Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBNs) and is designing and building the new Columbia-class for the nation’s strategic deterrent mission. The SSBN fleet is the most survivable leg of the nuclear Triad, carrying 70 percent of the nation’s deployed nuclear weapons. The Columbia class submarine program is in detailed design to support construction start in 2021. A minimum of 12 Columbia class submarines will be built to replace the Ohio class submarines, sustaining America’s vital deterrent capability into the 2080’s.
